I love when the Television Edition of Thursday Movie Picks rolls around. I watch a lot more TV than movies if I’m being honest. This week it’s all about game shows. Who doesn’t love a good classic TV game show. If you want to take part, the rules are simple; base on the theme of the week pick three to five movies (or shows) and tell us why you picked them.
1. Guys Grocery Games
I was late to the party on Guys Grocery Games but man, it’s one of my favorites these days. I can’t cook worth crap, which means I get a real thrill out of watching people rush around with weird ingredients trying to follow the rules and come up with something tasty. They do a lot of charity related episodes which is really nice to see too. I even have my favorite judges! And of course the judges that I could live without. If you’re looking for something fun, check it out!
2. Price Is Right
I mean, it’s a classic. I remember watching anytime I would stay home sick from school. My favorite game is PLINKO and the one I hate more than anything is the Mountain Climber. I hate the yodeling that goes along with it. The one game I think that’s most unfair is the 3 Strikes Game. I mean, it’s all chance there and no skill. You have no idea which chip you’re going to pull out! I do wonder if they’re “coded” some how.
3. Wheel Of Fortune
I’d kill this game if I ever appeared. That, or I’d freeze up and blow it. I love word puzzles and this is another classic game that I watch on a regular basis. I get way too fired up when I watch too. When someone gets greedy instead of just solving the puzzle and then lands on a bankrupt?! Oh man, my soul lights up.
4. Supermarket Sweep
I loved watching this back in the day and I think it’s making a come back soon! Of course it won’t be the same without the 80’s/90’s hair. I always loved when they had to rush around and hopefully come across one of the giant bonus items.
A pretty simple list this week. This was another week where I could have easily listed a few more but wanted to try and keep it short. I’m curious to see if I learn about any new game shows this week, and how many repeats happen!
I haven’t seen any of these but Wheel of Fortune was quite popular here years ago and I’ve seen some bits of Price is Right on movies and TV series.
I feel like Price is Right has been featured in a lot of media!
Love this list! I’ve always wanted to go on Supermarket Sweep haha
Right?! It would be a DREAM!
Wheel of Fortune is popular today! I picked it too. Price is Right is a good one but I’d never get chosen to be on it because there’s no way I could ever act that excited on command. I’m too cynical. lol
There’s no way I’d be able to hide my disappointment if I was picked but didn’t end up with PLINKO. LOL
Supermarket Sweep, I love that fucking show. That was awesome.
It really was the best!
I’ve seen at least a couple of episodes of your last three, the first is new to me, but I’m not much of a fan of any of them. I can only put up with all the screaming and shouting for so long and then I’m out. I did notice the other day that Supermarket Sweep is rerunning on the Bzzr network now.
Our taste in game shows run differently. By and large I like the ones that are more low-key and rely more on skill than luck.
The $25,000 Pyramid (1973-1988)-Starting in ’73 as the $10,000 Pyramid the game is played in two parts-two teams consisting of one contestant and one celebrity play three rounds of seven words which must be guessed by a description. Whichever team gets the highest score moves over to the Winner’s Circle where six subjects (in a pyramid shape) must be guessed using only a list in one minute. If all are guessed the contestant wins the title amount. Requiring both focus and a keen mind Dick Clark hosted the series in this iteration with a sure hand keeping the game moving. The latest tricked out version isn’t nearly as good with Michael Strahan doing a terrible hosting job but the game is strong enough to withstand even his feebleness and the weak, braying celebs and contestants that seem to populate it now. Betty White was a regular guest celebrity!
Password (1961-1989)-Again two teams consisting of one celebrity and one contestant try to guess a series of words which then are clues to a word puzzle. The first to solve three puzzles moves to Super Password where they attempt to guess ten words in alphabetical order for a big money prize. Betty White (she was married to original host Allen Ludden) was a regular guest celebrity!
Match Game (1962-1982)-Two contestants give answers to a series of fill in the blank questions and try to match the six celebrity panel to win big cash. Hosted by Gene Rayburn this goofy, freewheeling show (a week’s worth of shows were filmed in one day and the celebrities were known to imbibe heavily during the lunch break) was famous for its suggestive questions and madcap antics. Betty White was a regular guest celebrity!
Bonus oddity:
Celebrity Bowling (1971-1978)-Exactly what the title says. Two teams of celebs bowl to win prizes for selected home viewers! Bizarre show somehow managed to last an incredible seven years!! As far as I know Betty White was never a guest celeb!
I’m familiar with your choices but was too young to really watch or know them! Though some of my favorite older game shows were Name That Tune and Press Your Luck.
I watched The Price Is Right and remember clearly the chicky with the halter top that came down and she had no idea. Later, they show this clip as big blooper. I have watched Wheel of Fortune and I do like guessing the word but I also wonder if that is rigged because you always see one who clearly is the winner, another her makes $1,000 only to lose it and one who is always at a 0. I have. It seen the others and no care about the cooking show but I wouldn’t mind seeing what people grab. Do they head straight for the TP and flour? It would be interesting if they did considering how dumb people are right now with this virus.
Oh I love Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune and Supermarket Sweep (I wish they brought it back).
I like Plinko too on the Price is Right. Have you seen The Wall game show. It’s basically a mash up of Plinko and a quiz show.
I’ve seen commercials for that but haven’t had the chance to watch it yet!
