I don’t mean to go on blogging breaks but it happens. But it’s Thursday and that means it’s time for Thursday Movie Picks. The topic this week is Female Buddy Movies. The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them.
1. Girls Trip
Four best friends, known as the Flossy Posse, have grown apart over the years. Yet when one of the friends is offered an opportunity to be a keynote speaker at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, she decides to bring along her friends to turn her work vacation into a girl’s trip. Along the way, they rekindle their wild side by dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to excess.
I thought this movie was hilarious. The cast is great and the movie really did have some heart. If you haven’t seen it, check it out!
2. The House Bunny
Playboy Bunny Shelley Darlingson has lived a life of luxury at Hugh Hefner’s mansion. Disaster strikes, however, when Shelley turns 27 and is deemed as too old to be a Bunny. Kicked out into the real world, the girl ambles onto a college campus and tries to join a sorority. Finding a sorority made up of geeky, awkward girls – Zeta Alpha Zeta – Shelley teaches them the art of attracting boys, as only a Playboy Bunny can.
I thought this movie was cute. The cast is pretty stacked when you look back at it. Colin Hanks, Emma Stone, Kat Dennings, and Anna Faris! I always find myself watching this whenever I stumble across it on TV.
3. Wine Country
Six women question their friendships and futures when they travel to Napa Valley, California, to celebrate a 50th birthday.
This movie was fine. It’s on Netflix and I checked it out one day when I couldn’t find anything to watch. I almost feel like it’s the “ultimate female buddy movie” because Amy Poehler just filled the cast with her friends.
Keeping the list short this week as I try to get myself back into a blogging groove. I tried to mix it up a bit. I feel like these films all show different types of women and friendships. I can’t wait to see what movies everyone picked this week. Hopefully I’ll learn about some new movies!
I haven’t seen any of these but I’ve been meaning to catch up with The House Bunny. The other two sound okay, I’ll add them to my long to see list.
I reached back quite a way for my three since even if they weren’t referred to as female buddy movies the concept goes way back.
Stage Door (1937)-A group of aspiring actresses (including Lucille Ball, Eve Arden, Ann Miller and Gail Patrick) all live in a theatrical boarding house off Broadway as they pursue their dreams of success. When rich girl Terry Randall (Katharine Hepburn) arrives she at first doesn’t fit in and butts heads strongly with her roommate Jean Maitland (Ginger Rogers) but as time passes the women all pull together to support each other through their shared struggles, particularly those of sensitive and troubled Kay (Andrea Leeds who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress).
How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)-Three models-pragmatic Schatze Page (Lauren Bacall) , ditzy Loco Dempsey (Betty Grable) and extremely myopic Pola Debevoise (Marilyn Monroe)-lease a luxury apartment with a mission in mind. They want to snag millionaire husbands! They scheme, plot and hock the contents of the apartment to achieve their goals all the while dressing fabulously and for the most part being there for each other.
The Opposite Sex (1956)-Musicalized version of the classic ’39 film The Women looks at a circle of high society women friends (and some fremenies) as one of their number, Kay Hilliard’s (June Allyson) marriage hits the rocks when a gold digging showgirl Crystal Allen (Joan Collins) sets her sights on Kay’s husband Steven (Leslie Nielsen). Main differences from the first, the songs, color and men appear in this version.
I love The House Bunny! I haven’t seen the other two, but I’ve heard Girls Trip was hilarious.
I’ve only seen Girls Trip from your picks and it was so funny. I still laugh about that stupid grapefruit joke.
I was so looking forward to Wine Country because of the cast but it didn’t work at all for me. LOVE The House Bunny! Haven’t seen it in too long.
Same! I really thought it would be pretty great but it just fell flat.
I haven’t seen any but want to see the first one. House Bunny looked dumb when I saw the trailers for it but now I am intrigued
