My Top 5 “Mentalist” Episodes

May 18, 2020      B      1 Comment

I don’t know what’s going on lately but I can’t stop re-watching “The Mentalist.” I’ve watched the Lisbon/Jane wedding 18 times over the course of this pandemic. And I’m not even sorry. I loved the show when it was on and it’s been nice to just revisit. I love playing “Spot The Guest Star” and the Red John build up. Now I’m going to try and pick just five of my favorite episodes. The show was on for seven seasons. I thought about picking seven but let’s see how this goes. They’re in no real order though as far as the list.

1. Red John – Season 6 Episode 8

I’m sure you can tell by the title what this episode is all about. Finally, after six season, Patrick Jane has finally unmasked Red John. If I had more space on my list I’d add the previous two episodes as well. It’s a really great three episode build to the final showdown. I imagine there was a lot of pressure to get the Red John wrap up right and I feel like they nailed it. After 10 years of announcing “I’m going to kill Red John,” Patrick did just that. I have to wonder if anyone watching back then was surprised by it. I think some of us were 50/50 on it but I never had any doubts. I was more curious about how he was going to do it. In order for Patrick (and the show) to move on, it had to be done. There was no way he was going to find happiness again without this step.

2. Blue Bird – Season 6 Episode 22

Finally, after waiting years to hear it, Patrick confesses his feelings to Lisbon. All it took was for some other dude to propose and for her to attempt to move to D.C. but hey, some of us need a real kick in the ass. Plus it’s just a fun episode with a classic Jane prank and Cho being 100% clueless about what’s going on. The speech he delivers to Lisbon on the plane is just amazing and heartfelt. Simon Baker did a great job of really bringing it to a scene that a lot of fans had been hoping would happen. And then, THEN, they finally share their first kiss while he’s being held for storming a plane in the first place. I can’t think of anything more perfect for those two.

3. Red Dawn – Season 5 Episode 99

I love when a show does a flashback episode to the early days. “Bones” has an episode like that and “Red Dawn” is The Mentalist’s. It goes back to before Patrick was a consultant, instead he was just a broken man trying to get answers to the murder of his wife and child. But it does a great job of showing his skills. He annoys someone at the CBI enough that he gets punched in the face and he uses that to help him gain access to the Red John files. By the end of the episode everyone is impressed and he’s offered the job. What I like about this episode is that it shows Jane as not very confident. When the series starts, the team is already a team, and Jane is already this “smarter than everyone in the room” guy. But not here. He’s still someone dealing with a horrible trauma.

4. Brown Shag Carpet/White Orchids – Season 7 Episode 12 & 13 (2 Hour Finale)

This might be cheating but oh well. Everything I love about crime shows happened in these two episodes. We have a weird serial killer, Patrick having to pretend to be a Physic again, a proposal and a wedding! That’s a lot for only two hours but they made it happen and made it work. Patrick having to make the rounds as a fake physic is such a great call back to his past, plus it puts you on edge a little bit. He has to use all his skills to get out of this pickle but of course Lisbon comes to his rescue, which then leads to such a sweet proposal. It’s not a shock that Patrick has a way with words, we’ve seen it for years at this point, but when it comes from the heart it just hits differently. Another scene that I love is when Lisbon and Cho go dress shopping. The fact she asked him for help just warms my heart, and then he nails it?? Amazing. Then later we have Lisbon in a wedding dress pointing a gun at a murderer? CHEF KISS. It was the perfect wrap up the series. I’m not always someone who’s down with a Happy Ending but knowing that Patrick found love again and gets to be a father for a 2nd time? *sobs*

5. White As The Driven Snow – Season 6 Episode 15

In this episode Grace is kidnapped by a past suspect and Rigsby has to try and keep it together in order to find her. What I love about this episode is we see how far Grace and Wayne have come. They’re both extremely strong people who have come miles since the Pilot episode. Grace doesn’t just sit around and wait to be found, she tries to save herself. We have Patrick and Wayne teaming up to pull one over on the suspect and man, even I was fooled during some of it! I should have known better but it’s refreshing when a show can keep you guessing a little bit. Rigsby has always loved Grace and it just really shows here. I mean, he was shot numerous times and was still able to save her. And you can’t go wrong with an episode that has a classic Jane set up.

* * * * *

I’m actually surprised that I had so many favorites happen later in the series. While at the time I was sad to see the show end after only Seven seasons, in hindsight it made sense. Once you wrap up the Red John story line, there isn’t much more to do. The entire premise of the series was Patrick Jane getting revenge. They did a great job though of keeping it interesting and adding new members to the team, and even changing locations from California to Texas. I’m not sure the quality of the show would have lasted if it went on for another season or two. As far as the list goes, I can think of a few more episodes I probably would have added like “Red Badge” and “Red Sky in the Morning.”

I had fun coming up with this and I might do it for other shows I love! It’s been hard coming up with post ideas and well, these are easy enough to put together and it’s always a good time to revisit favorite shows. Did you watch “The Mentalist?” If you did, give me some of your favorite episodes!

TV Theme Songs That I Love

February 6, 2020      B      4 Comments

Thanks to Thursday Movie Picks, I’ve stumbled across some new blogs! One of them is Mettel Ray. She recently did a post highlighting five of her favorite TV themes and I thought that was a great idea for a post! While reading her list I had a ton of favorites fill my head and here are a few of them.

Dexter

I love everything about the opening sequence for this show. I love how coy it is given what the show is about. It’s one of the few openings that I never skip. At one point I even had it set as my ringtone. I feel like an opening tune for a show about a serial killer could have easily been dark and gritty, but this one is actually light and almost airy?

Psych

I feel like opening credit songs are a dying breed these days. The best part about the “Psych” theme is how they’ll change it up from time to time based on the episode. They’ve done a Bollywood version and Boys II Men has even performed it once. There’s also a short version and a longer version as well.

Bones

I love the techno vibe of this opening. I feel like it fits in really well with the show. I think later on in the series they changed it up a little bit but it’s still a banger of a show theme. Plus it’s by The Crystal Method!

X-Files

Is there a more classic, modern day TV theme than this one? I feel like even if you didn’t watch this show, you still recognized this music. My science teacher back in Middle School introduced me to “The X-Files” way back in the day and it’s still a show I love. Even if they tried really hard to fuck it all up.

So, how many of these themes have worked their way into your brains after reading this? What TV themes would be on your list? Let me know!

TMP Television Edition #290: 2019 Freshmen Series

January 30, 2020      B      8 Comments

I took off last week but I’m back for Thursday Movie Picks! This time around it’s a TV edition! I probably watch a lot more TV than I do movies, so I really look forward to the monthly TV edition of the prompt. If you need a little refresher on how this works, ss the name suggests, Thursday Movie Picks is held every Thursday. The rules are simple; base on the theme of the week pick three to five movies (or TV shows) and tell us why you picked them.

1. The Mandalorian (Disney+)

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. The series depicts a lone bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

I don’t consider myself a huge fan of Star Wars. I think it’s “fine” but man, this show is amazing. Even if you’ve never seen a Star Wars film, you’d 100% enjoy this show. It’s only 8 episodes which I love. Sometimes I think network television could learn a thing or two from the streaming services. The score, settings, and effects are all top notch. In my opinion, it’s better than any of the movies. Sorry, not sorry. I can’t wait for Season Two! You can read more about my thoughts on the show here.

2. Prodigal Son (Fox)

The series centers on Malcolm Bright, whose father, Martin Whitly, is the infamous serial killer known as “The Surgeon”. As a child, Malcolm was responsible for enabling the police to arrest his father, and has not (of his own volition) seen his father in ten years. Now a profiler, formerly with the FBI (until he was fired) and currently consulting for the New York Police Department, Malcolm is forced to confront his father after a copycat serial killer uses Dr. Whitly’s methods of killing. He now finds himself drawn back into constant contact with his father as he must both use Whitly’s insights to help the police solve particularly horrible crimes and battle his own inner demons.

I’m a sucker for a show about a serial killer. I wasn’t 100% hooked from the start but as the series went on it became a show I really looked forward to each week. It just came back from winter break and the episode was bonkers! I can’t wait to see where the show goes. I hope we learn more about the crimes of Martin Whitly, and about Malcolm’s childhood. The show was picked up for a full season, so hopefully that means a 2nd season is a go. But with Fox you can never be sure.

3. EVIL (CBS)

Skeptical psychologist Kristen Bouchard joins David Acosta, who is training to be a Catholic priest, and a blue collar contractor as they investigate the church’s backlog of unexplained mysteries, including supposed miracles, demonic possessions and other extraordinary occurrences. Their job is to assess if there’s a logical explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work, examining the origins of evil along the dividing line between science and religion.

This is a show I started to watch and really thought I’d like. After about 4 episodes, I dropped it. The show just got a little too weird and confusing, even for me. I guess it just wasn’t what I was expecting. The character, Dr. Leland Townsend, played by Michael Emerson is just too creepy. There’s just something about him that puts me on edge and I don’t like it.

4. The Unicorn (CBS)

A recently widowed father with two daughters is encouraged by his friends to re-enter the dating scene. Surprisingly to both him and his friends, he becomes the most sought after single guy due to his widowed father status

This show slowly grew on me. It’s a bit of a dramedy. I’d say there’s more fun and comedic episodes but because of the topic of the show, there’s a few very heart felt episodes too. The entire cast is great. The main lead is Walton Goggins who you might know from “Justified,” “The Shield,” and “Ant-Man And The Wasp.”

There ya go! Honestly, I’m not someone to always pick up new shows. I’m always worried I’ll really love one and then it’ll get cancelled. Plus I’m pretty loyal to the shows I already watch. If a show comes on against a time slot of a show I love, I’m probably not even going to check it out.

Thursday Movie Picks #276: Halloween/Television Edition: Horror

October 31, 2019      B      7 Comments

Thursday Movie Picks is a blogging prompt put together by Wandering Through The Shelves! I’ve wanted to take part before but end up forgetting about it or being stumped on the theme for the week. I’m bummed I didn’t take part in more of the Halloween prompts but better late than never! The rules are simple: based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. This week it’s Halloween/Television Edition: Horror.

1. American Horror Story

I can’t pick just one season because I’ve really enjoyed a few even though I didn’t even bother with AHS: Cult. If I had to pick just three of my favorite seasons it would be Murder House, Coven, and Hotel. I do like that every season is different but they all seem to tie together in small ways. It’s like the MCU, but weird horror edition. Lady Gaga is fantastic in Hotel and no one compares to Jessica Lange.

2. Teen Wolf

Does this count as horror? Oh well. It’s close enough. There were a number of episodes that were creepy as hell. I was actually a little late on the Teen Wolf wagon but I’m glad I hitched a ride. Sure, some of it was frustrating but in the end I enjoyed it. If you’re not into a lot of gore this show would be good for you. It’s more spooky than anything else, and pretty funny at times too.

3. Tales from the Crypt

I loved watching Tales from The Crypt as a kid! I mean, sure maybe I shouldn’t have been allowed to watch it but I turned out fine. The Crypt Keeper is such an iconic horror mascot and I do love a good anthology style series. Since it aired on HBO it was one of the few anthology series to be allowed to have full freedom from censorship that meant nudity, violence, and naughty words. Oh my! It honestly feels like a walk in the park compared to what you’ll find on TV these days. A few well known actors appeared in episodes including Demi Moore, Teri Hatcher, Kyle MacLachlan, and Brad Pitt just to name a few.

4. Are You Afraid of the Dark?

This was my JAM as a kid. I guess I’ve always been a bit of a spooky bitch. Again, another anthology series. I do think when it comes to horror, it’s a great way to handle it. You don’t need to stress about filling multiple episodes with one big arc or anything. You can just focus on one episode at a time, and it’s easier to nab guest stars or directors if they only need to worry about one thing. I love how it was a bunch of kids sitting around a fire and telling stories. It made it feel more “real” to me.

5. Fear Itself

Does anyone else remember this? It aired on NBC back in 2008. It was supposed to come back after the Olympics were over but for whatever reason it never did, which is really disappointing. One of my favorite episodes was “Skin & Bones.” A man returns home to his family after being lost in the forest for a number of days but it’s not a happy reunion. Turns out he’s possessed by a Wendigo. It only aired 13 episodes, which I guess it kinda weird and spooky on its own eh?

I tried to mix it up with a few different choices. When I got around to thinking about the horror related shows out there, I never realized just how many there were. I probably could have easily listed a few more. What shows would make your list? Anyone else enjoy the shows I have listed here?
