5 Fandom Friday: Favorite Book to Movie Adaptations

May 29, 2020      B      2 Comments

I took a little break from 5 Fandom Friday but I couldn’t pass this one up! I can’t wait to see what everyone picks this week. There’s a lot of adaptations out there to pick from. Now let’s get to it!

1. Jurassic Park

This shouldn’t be a surprise at all. I love both the book and the movie. They really did a great job of bringing the story to life but making changes when needed. In my opinion, some of the best adaptations are when changes are made. It helps keep it fresh and exciting. Plus I spend less time comparing them mentally!

2. Silence of the Lambs

Again, no surprise here! I’ve read the book more times than I can count, and watched the movie more times than I can remember. Again, there are enough differences between the two that you might like one more than the other. I enjoy both for various reasons. I actually have a few different copies of both the book and the movie. Maybe I have a problem.

3. Misery

I actually didn’t read this book until recently and whoa boy. You think the movie is violent? You should read the book! I think it’s one of the better Stephen King adaptations. I think part of the reason for that is the story isn’t anything mystical or magical. It’s just a stalker who happens across her target.

4. The Martian

This book had me on the edge of my seat and actually in tears more than once. I still can’t believe how stressed out I was. I picked the book up before the movie came out and was really pleased with how they took it from page to screen. Again, changes were made but they worked and added to the story. The book had a lot of science (for obvious reasons) but the movie did a great job of making it more “user friendly.”

5. JAWS

It might be time for a JAWS re-read. It’s been awhile since I’ve read it but I watch the movie anytime it’s on TV. Plus I own a few different versions of it. There’s a lot of stuff in the book that didn’t make it into the film but I don’t think it affects it negatively. It’s a fine balance, especially when a book it on the larger size. You really have to pick and choose what will make the best story.

I feel like I’ve made this exact list before, probably for a Thursday Movie Picks list. But oh well. I like what I like and none of these choices should surprise anyone. I expect to see “Jurassic Park” on a few lists but I’m curious if any of the others will. I expect to see a few “Hunger Games” and “Harry Potter” picks! What are some of your favorite book to movie adaptations?

5 Fandom Friday: Favorite MCU Moments

April 3, 2020      B      6 Comments

I don’t know how I’m supposed to pick just 5 MCU moments. I mean, we’re talking 10 years worth of films here. Almost every movie has it’s own “moment.” Some do stand out more than others though. Here are the five that I picked.

1. “Avengers. Assemble.” (Avengers: Endgame)

I still get goosebumps (and a few tears) when thinking about this. Finally, after years of waiting to hear those words, it happened. And it happened in the most epic way possible. I still can’t believe we managed to see all those heroes in one movie, in one place coming together to save the world, and the universe. It’s such a special moment and probably something we won’t see again anytime soon.

2. “I Am Iron Man.” (Iron Man)

This line takes on a different feeling now after “Avengers: Endgame” but without “Iron Man” there’s no MCU. There aren’t any top moments or memories. This one line just perfectly sums up Tony Stark. He’s going to do things his way no matter what he’s told.

3. Black Panther In Civil War (Captain America: Civil War)

What an amazing intro for a new character! Plus it changed the way the MCU introduced heroes. It helped move them away from the typical introduction style movie. We easily learn what Black Panther is all about in just this scene, and movie. By the end T’Challa shows why he should be King of Wakanda. He shows empathy and understanding. But we see he’s an amazing warrior as well and just a hint about the technological advances we’ll see down the road.

4. Thor Goes Full Thor (Thor: Ragnarok)

Look, in all the MCU I don’t think there’s a more beautiful scene then this. It’s just perfect. The music, the style, the look. The fact we finally got to see Thor go full God of Thunder. It’s perfection.

5. Steve vs. Bucky (Captain America: Winter Soldier)

Having to see two childhood friends fight it out is heartbreaking, but who are we kidding? It’s hot too. This is probably my favorite MCU movie and watching these two highly skilled characters battle on a crashing helicarrier is just one reason why. To find out your friend is actually alive, and being used a weapon against the world? Just hit me with a truck while you’re at it.

. . . . .

This was a hard list to come up with. I could easily list five more. I mean, we have Spider-Man entering the MCU. Then there’s Carol Danvers realizing her full potential. Steve jumping on a grenade, showing what kind of person he is. Tony finding out who actually killed his parents. Black Widow and her hallway fight scene from “Iron Man 2.” Then you have a movie like “Guardians of the Galaxy” that finally takes the MCU to space and really introduces Thanos.

5 Fandom Friday: Disney Cosplays/Cosplayers

March 13, 2020      B      Leave a Comment

It’s been a bit quiet around here but it’s Friday. I can always count on 5 Fandom Friday to help break it up and get the creative juices floating. This time around we’re talking about cosplay! I’m going to lump Star Wars/Marvel into Disney as well. I don’t follow a ton of Disney only cosplayers but I follow a ton that mix it up! This list is in no order. Everyone here is fantastic and number one in my book.

1. Angi Viper

I’ve been following Angi Viper for years. Whenever I think about Elsa, I think about her! I think she was one of the first cosplayers to jump into the Elsa frenzy. She’s always working on updating or creating a new version. She cosplays a ton of different characters though like Anastasia, Phoenix, and various DC & Anime characters. Be sure to give her a follow!

2. Bettie Bloodshed

I’ve been friends with her for years and she’s always working on improving her costumes! I love that she crossplays too and just always looks amazing. You can tell she puts a lot of time and love into her characters. Her Hux is outstanding but she does other characters too like Mysterio (which is hilarious), Captain Marvel, and Lady Loki.

3. Katrina

Katrina doesn’t just cosplay for fun, but to help children who are dealing with some pretty heavy things. She’s part of Critical Care Comics, a nonprofit organization that delivers comic books to kids in Vegas area hospitals and medical facilities while dressed as super heroes! How amazing is that? She’s probably best know for her various Black Widow looks but mixes it up with some Spider-Gwen and non-Marvel cosplays like Harley Quinn!

4. Cheyenne Wise

She popped up on my radar thanks to Katrina! Don’t challenge her to cosplay someone because she’ll do it and she’ll kill it. Everything she does is fire and the amount of looks she pulls off is simply mind blowing. A few of her cosplays include Miles Morales, Shuri, Mary Jane and non-Disney characters like Black Canary, Starfire, and Jessica Rabbit!

5. Leo Camcho

You might now know the name but you probably recognize him! He was all over Buzzfeed for a hot second because he legit looks like a Disney Prince! He doesn’t cosplay as much anymore but when he does, it’s always dead on. A few of his cosplays include Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, and Price Eric.

Tada! There’s my list! I hope you came across someone new here and give everyone a follow. You won’t regret it.

5 Fandom Friday: Fictional Characters You’d Invite To Tea

February 28, 2020      B      1 Comment

It’s time for another 5 Fandom Friday! This time around we’re having tea with some of our faves. I could easily list hundreds of characters I’d want to sip (or spill) the tea with but no one has time for that.

1. Harley Quinn

I’d love to ask her about fashion, fighting skills, how to take care of a hyena. I’d love to pick her brain about some of the other characters that live in Gotham. I’d wonder if she’d be open to reflecting on her relationship with Joker and if she regrets falling for him. Her life would be very different but our struggles and mistakes are part of who we are today. I have a feeling she’d enjoy a little vodka mixed in with her tea. Or maybe grabbing a Twisted Tea instead of your typical hot cup.

2. Clint Barton

There are numerous versions of this character but I think I’d focus on maybe the MCU version. While I hate the fact he was given a family (I think it was dumb and pointless), I’d ask how he met his wife. How did he keep his family safe and a secret for that long. Are the kids home schooled? How do they explain what he does and all the weirdness that happens in the world. Do they know that dad goes off to fight aliens? Laura and Natasha seem like friends now, but were the always that close? Basically, I’d pay a game of 20 Questions with him.

3. Owen Grady

I need to know how he was able to get Blue and the squad to accept him! Sure, we saw a little tiny but in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom with the video footage of him training Blue. But what about all the time between when they were born and to where they are now? I find it hard to believe he never lost a finger! But it would be hilarious if we found out he lost a toe.

4. Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas

Honestly, I think she just needs a friend to listen to her sometimes. I want to be that friend. We all know Jack didn’t listen when she tried to warn him that everything was a bad idea. I think she just needs a Girl Day where we have some tea, maybe some little sandwiches and just relax. Plus I beat she has a ton of tea about Dr. Finkelstein. You know that dude was a freak!

5. Eddie from Hawaii 5-0

Yes, Eddie is a dog. But he’s a very well trained dog and I just want to take him for walks. And then to the dog park. Maybe play some fetch. Take him for a swim. Snuggle on the couch! Maybe a little pampering too, a nice bath! Maybe trim his nails a little bit.

I tried to really mix it up this time. I could have easily picked 5 characters from the same movies or films. That might be an interesting angle! What cast would you like to share a beer or drink with?

5 Fandom Friday: Female Duos/Friendships

February 14, 2020      B      3 Comments

I’m back with another 5 Fandom Friday! This time we’re talking female friendships, which is perfect for Galentine’s Day! It’s funny how I wasn’t sure I could come up with 5 but then they just started flowing. I might do my own version with male friendships because why not!

1. Angela & Bones (Bones)

It shouldn’t be a surprise to see these two on my list. I’m in a middle of a “Bones” rewatch and I just love their friendship beyond words. Angela really understands Temperance, even when no one else does. They’re two very different people but the love and friendship they share is something special. I believe they would do anything to help the other, and honestly we’ve seen that over the course of the show.

2. Ann & Leslie (Parks & Rec)

Are you really surprised to see this one on the list? Sure, they had a weird and rough start but by the end of the series, they were each others rocks. We don’t always get to see a friendship actually grow in a show. Most of the time we come in and everything is already a thing. It was really nice to see their friendship progress.

3. Rizzoli and Isles (Rizzoli and Isles)

I still miss this show! I feel like it ended maybe just a little too soon. Again, we have two women who are pretty different but still manage to be the best of friends. I think if we’ve learned anything from some of these shows, it’s that you really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. A meaningful friendship can come from the most unlikely place. If you haven’t checked this show out, I highly recommend it!

4. Cece + Jess (New Girl)

Another show I miss! And a friendship that I love. I’m not sure it gets more ride or die than these two. Everything from break ups to weddings, they always had each other.

5. Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy

I haven’t picked up a comic in years but I go way back to the Batman Animated Series with these two. We all need that friend that points out that we’re way better than the relationship we’re stuck in. That you are you’re own person and don’t need to stay with some crappy dude in order to have any worth.

I can’t wait to see who everyone else has on their lists. And now I want to go and rewatch pretty much every show I have on this list.

5 Fandom Friday: Ways To Enjoy Self Care

January 10, 2020      B      5 Comments

I can’t believe 5 Fandom Friday is back! This blogging prompt was a favorite of mine and I’m glad to see it’s alive and kicking. I hope the news spreads and more bloggers take part! Oh and if you’re confused, I use to blog at You Fancy Me Mad! I ran into some weird issues there and started this new blog. Welcome!

1. Go To The Movies Solo

I know a lot of people feel weird about going to the movies alone but I love it. You can sit wherever you want, go at a time that works for you (I like after work myself), and more importantly, see whatever movie you want! Why miss out on a film you want to see because your friends aren’t interested?

2. Disconnect

Sometimes we just need a break from the internet and social media. I took a cruise last year and for a week I had no connection and it was pretty great. I didn’t miss it at all and I was able to enjoy the moments around me. You don’t have to do a full week but unplugging for a weekend can be a great thing.

3. Take A Look, It’s In A Book

Reading! Another great way to escape your worries for a bit. It doesn’t matter if it’s a book, fan fiction, or a comic book. Whatever you enjoy reading is a great way to take a break. I know it’s something I want to work on this year.

4. Get Outside

Maybe you read that book at the park. Or take a walk around your neighborhood. Sometimes just being outside in the sun can do wonders for your mood. Personally I want to start trying to go on more hikes this year and really take in the nature that’s around me.

5. Baby Yoda

Feeling down? Just look at The Child! Nothing turns that frown upside down like a tiny green space baby. Scroll through some Baby Yoda memes and have yourself a giggle.

That’s it for this week! Don’t forget to check out Sartorial Geek for more information on 5 Fandom Friday and to find the list of topics for the year!
