Getting A Tattoo At A Tattoo Convention

September 22, 2019      B      2 Comments

There are conventions for everything these days, including tattoos! I’ve been wanting to check out my local tattoo convention for years but just never got around to it. It seemed like I was always out of town or just had other plans. Or honestly, I’d forget it was even happening. This past May though I changed that and headed downtown to check it out. I only bought a single day pass (Saturday) because I wasn’t sure if I needed more than one day. I had no idea what to expect since I had never been. When I entered the section of the convention center dedicated to the tattoo convention, my ears were filled with the sound of tattoo machines buzzing. I took my time to take everything in. I slowly made my way around the floor, checking out every tattoo booth along the way. Some artists had flash sheets and other merch for sale. A majority of them were already tattooing, or setting up their schedules for the day. It was easy to tell if an artist was accepting any clients for the day. Each table had a sign that said either books were open, or they were booked up for the day. Every artist is different when it comes to tattoo cons. Some will book ahead of time, others will do walk ups only, and some will do a mix of both.

After making a couple laps, checking out some booths, I started trying to find someone who was accepting walk ups and could execute what I wanted. I found one artist I thought would be a good fit based on her books but we just didn’t mesh. I got a weird vibe from her and just moved on. Then I came across the table for Chris. I could tell by his Avengers flash that he was the man for the job. He was obviously a nerd and had seen Avengers: Endgame which mattered a bit. Why? Because I was getting an America’s Ass related tattoo. His booth was a little crowded, so I kept wandering around and pretty much stalking his table until it cleared out. I was finally able to talk to him and show him my idea. He. Loved. It. I sent him a text with the image I wanted the tattoo based on and he asked that I come back in about 45 minutes. He had to make a few little edits to make it tattoo worthy and then make the stencil. I had no issues with that. I again wandered around then it was go time! I hopped up on the table and Chris got to work. He was super easy to talk to and had a great hand when it came to tattooing. It was a little weird knowing people could just stop and watch but it wasn’t a big deal. The tattoo was on my calf/ankle, it’s not like my ass was out for the world to see. Before I knew it, he was finished! And I was in love!

Now that’s America’s Ass. And it’s based on this pin by Elhoffer Design. I mean, I think he nailed it. When I shared it on Twitter, the response was hilarious. I’m not sure Chris Evans has seen it but I tagged his ass, along with the Russo Brothers and everyone else I could think of.

And for those wondering, yes it’s safe to get a tattoo at a convention! Everything is clean and properly sanitized just like at a shop. My artist made sure to wipe the table down I was going to use, showed me his machine set up and everything else before we got started. It was honestly a wonderful experience. If you do plan on getting work done at a con, I recommend getting there early if you can. The later in the day you go, the more likely artists will be booked up. Or if there’s an artist you like who’s been announced, check to see if they’re accepting clients before the convention. The most wonderful thing about these conventions is the fact artists come from all around the world. Chris was from Connecticut I think. A friend got a tattoo by someone from California. I know a few artists from the UK were in attendance as well.

And there you have it! Funny enough, this wasn’t the only tattoo I had done in May, or even the only Marvel tattoo I had done in May. I might write about that one later! If you have any questions about tattoo conventions let me know below and I’ll try my best to answer them!

It’s Been Two Years Since London

September 18, 2019      B      Leave a Comment

I can’t believe it’s been two years already! I went to London back in September 2017 to watch the Baltimore Ravens play. That’s our football team if you’re new here. I booked a package through a travel group that specialized in these trips. It made the entire trip very easy plus took care of things like our game tickets, transportation, and hotel. They offered fun touristy things too like a trip to the London Eye, special events, and a riverboat dinner cruise. If you’re someone who’s thinking about following your team across the pond, I highly recommend looking into something similar. I did book my own flights though since I was going over earlier than needed. I added a few extra days that way I could hang out with Katy and do some stuff away from the group. It was honestly a fantastic time even if my team lost. It was cool being part of something like that and hanging out with a bunch of other fans, even if myself and Melinda were the youngest people on this trip. Plus London really gets into the NFL thing. There were banners up everywhere, special pep rally’s at local pubs, and a really awesome interactive area at the stadium before the game. At the game it was amazing to see jersey’s for every team. That’s not even an exaggeration. Eagles? Check. Colts? Check. Dolphins? Check. Packers? Yup. And some of these jersey’s were old school players! It made me wonder if they were expats, if they traveled over just for football, or if they were locals who just some how became attached to a team. Here are a few photos from the football part of things. I might write another post going into more detail about everything else I did but we’ll see. My memory is crap and it’s been awhile!

Another part that was really nice was walking around London and running into other Ravens fans. The city really was painted purple. It was hilarious how we’d all just do a little head nod in passing. Of course being the person I am, I didn’t talk to any of these random people I came across. Why would I do something like that? But you really did feel like you were part of something special and different. I recommend visiting London either way, but if you can add a football game to it, I recommend it even more! They really know how to throw a party and the largest citywide tailgate I’ve seen.

Checking Out Maryland’s Only Piercing Only Studio: Freyja Piercing And Fine Jewelry

September 17, 2019      B      Leave a Comment

I know that title sounds redundant but I wasn’t sure how else to word it. In most cases, when you think about a piercing studio or shop, you think of one that’s attached to a tattoo shop. The two just go hand in hand. That’s how I’ve always experienced them. But now Maryland has it’s first and only piercing only studio, Freyja Body Piercing & Fine Jewelry. The studio is owned by Matt Buonantuono, with the help of Jessi who oversees the service/customer side of things, and another piercer, Chris. If Matt’s name sounds familiar, you might know him from Black Lotus Tattoo. That’s where I first met Matt! The studio is located in Gambrills, Maryland and let me tell you, it’s beautiful! The shop opened early January and I couldn’t wait to check it out. Everything they had teased on Instagram had me itching to see it in person. I was finally able to find the time a few weeks ago.

Freyja offers nothing but the best when it comes to jewelry, carrying brands like BVLA, Anatometal, Body Gems, and more. The amount of choices there is almost overwhelming. They even have options like Harry Potter and Wonder Woman! Not to mention, if you want something custom they can help you with that as well. It’s my goal to one day have something custom but that’ll have to wait a bit. You can find out more about what they offer here. The most important thing though, to me anyway, is how professional everyone at the studio is. I’ve always felt comfortable with Matt. He really cares about every customer that comes in. He explains everything in perfect detail, always open to questions, and won’t do a piercing if it doesn’t work with your anatomy. He doesn’t consider the job done until your piercing, no matter what it is, is healed. Because the studio is piercing only, it’s a very relaxing atmosphere. There’s no buzzing of tattoo equipment, not a mess of background noise of people having consultations. You’re able to focus 100% on what you’re there for.

If you’re in the area, I highly recommend checking them out. Even if you only need new bling for current piercings. Everyone at the studio really is amazing and professional. Plus they make it very easy to book appointments by offering online bookings through their website, Facebook, and Instagram. No need to try and get a hold of someone on the phone! You can do it all yourself. Of course if you aren’t sure what your piercing is called, or have questions, you can always give them a ring. And I can’t end this post without a photo of their floors. Honestly, pictures don’t do them justice. You should go visit them just to see the amazing details in their flooring.

As far as what I had pierced? You’ll have to wait to see! What piercings do you guys have? Ever been to a “piercing only” shop? Let me know in the comments!

Elhoffer Design: A Post To Help With Sizing And Fit

September 14, 2019      B      1 Comment

I write a lot about Elhoffer Design. I can’t help it, I just really love her stuff. It’s just the right amount of nerdy/geeky without being too in your face. You can easily wear some of her offerings to both the office and a convention. But like with most online shopping, it’s hard to figure out your size. Even if you know your measurements, it can still be hard to figure out the fit. Maybe you like things tighter? Maybe you’re a fellow shortie and aren’t sure where a dress will hit. Well, hopefully this post will help you out. I reached out to some fellow Starpuffs (that’s what we call ourselves) to share their sizing and measurements. Elhoffer shoppers come in all shapes and sizes and I wanted to try and show that as much as possible. I hope this post will help some of you that are on the fence about ordering! If you have any other questions, please let me know and I’ll try my best to help you out!

Me
Height: 4′ 10″
Bust: 32DD (36.5″)
Waist: 29″
Hips: 38″
Dresses/Tops: Medium
Oversized Sweaters: XS/S
Extra Thoughts: I’m a solid Medium in pretty much everything. I do think I could size down in the wrap dresses to a Small and be totally fine with it. Since I’m short, hemming is a thing for sure with some of the longer dresses but in the knits it’s not really an issue. I like my stuff a little tighter, so when it comes to oversize items, I go with a XS/S.

Whitney
Bust:38DD
Waist: 31/32″
Hips: 40″
Size: Large

Kelly
Height: 5’8″ (and a half)
Bust: 41″
Waist: 33″
Hips: 45″
Tops/Dresses: XL
Skirts: Large
Oversized Sweaters: Size down to a M/L instead of XL/XXL
Extra Notes: “I find everything is very true to size. I’ve never had to return or exchange anything. The measurement chart is very easy to use and if you’re between sizes definitely size down as they’re not kidding about the stretch being very forgiving.”

Katarina
Height: 5′ 1″
Bust: 32″
Waist: 25″
Hips: 36″
Size: XS
Extra Thoughts: I purchase XS and they fit pretty spot on even if I measure closer to a S on some pieces. It’s the beauty of the stretch that practically every piece has. In fact I have a small cardigan that I bought on Black Friday and ended up taking it in. I’m only 5’1 so I do have to hem the longer dresses and capes are a bit more epic on me length wise but it’s easy to add a hem so I’m not bothered by that.

Samantha:
Height: 5′ 6″
Bust: 37″
Waist: 29″
Hips: 38″
Size: Medium
Extra Thoughts: Pretty much any US size 8 will fit me, though sometimes I can squeeze into a size 6. When it comes to Elhoffer sizing, I almost always get the size medium. I find that they have really generous mediums.

Ashley
Height: 5′ 4″
Bust: 47″ (42D)
Waist: 45.5/46″
Hips: 46″
Size: XL-3XL. In unisex styles I’m typically XL.
Extra Thoughts: For me, Elhoffer’s stuff fits even better than clothes I get at brick & mortar stores. It’s loose enough to where it’s comfortable and flattering without being baggy which is an issue I run into else where since I can float between sizes.

Alice:
Height: 5’2
Bust: 33″
Waist: 27″
Hip: 38″
Sizing: Small or XS depending on the style/fit.

Colleen
Height- 69.5”
Shoulders – 15.5″
Bust – 39.5″
Underbust – 33″
Waist- 34.75″
Hips- 48″
Inseam- 33″
Waist to knee- 23″
Arm length- 23″
Size: Normally Medium
Extra Thoughts: I usually wear a size medium, but the Galactic Commander medium was too tight. My arms are a bit too long for the thumb holes in sweaters to feel comfortable. I probably should have gotten a large in the pleated midi skirt but I’ll lose the weight!!

Jennifer
Bust: 35″
Waist: 28″
Size: Mainly Small with a few XS or Medium
Extra Thoughts: I like things fitted and found that Elhoffer mediums are just a tad bit loose on me. Pretty much everything I own is smalls, except my winter soldier shell and Padme cardi are XS and my commander dress is a medium.

Ashley
Height: 5′ 3″
Chest: 36D
Waist: 30″-32″
Hips:43″
Size: Medium/Large
Extra Thoughts: I am usually a Medium but own the bravery shell in Large as I wanted the shell to be a bit longer on my frame. The Queen of Dragons hi-low is a medium, but I’ve owned the small and was able to get myself into it but I feel more comfortable with the Medium dress as it’s not AS snug on the girls.

Rachel:
Height: 5’1”
Bust: 40” (with a min padded bra and I wear a 36DD usually)
Waist: 36”
Hips: 44”
Biceps: 14-14.5”
Extra Thoughts: I included an oversized sweater (xs/s so more fitted), short sleeved cardi (L or xl. The extra large fits better over my bust but I can get away with the L if I pay attention to the type of bra I wear or just not close it these are my sun guardian(L) vs sailor guardian pics (xl)), Shell (L but rides up and I need to watch the bra with it), midi skirt (M but it’s tight! Not horribly uncomfortable but I notice I’m wearing it all day tight and I have to wear it right underneath my bust), unisex shawl (S but could have wore an XS it’s still rather large on me), the galactic dolman (xs-l and the length hits my knees) longline cardigan (L I SHOULD have gotten a M, it’s going to be tailored later), cropped sweater (xs/s it fits well everywhere but it’s tight in the arms, a m/l would probably be better overall but sample sale!), cropped sweater (L and due to the fabric fits perfectly) and a sweater that just buttons at the top or no button (L since I don’t have to worry about the girls and it fits over my biceps)

Devyn:
Height 5’6”
Waist: 33″
Hips:39″
Butt:46″
Bust: 38.5″
Biceps (which is always the area I am most concerned with when they are fitted) 14.5
Weight: 205
Size: Medium or Large

Christina: She’s the fit model for Medium! They are made to her measurements and then scaled accordingly for other sizes.
Height: 5’7″
Bust: 38″
Waist: 29″

Not sure how to take your measurements? Christina offers this advice:

A measurement tape from amazon or a sewing kit etc. for bust measure the fullest part of your chest. Keep the tape even, flat and taught. For waist put your hands on your hips and bend over. The part that “bends” is your natural waist. Do the same thing as above here. Hips should be lower than your hip bones around the top full part.

I normally have someone help take mine, that way I know the measuring tape isn’t messed up or not exactly where it should be. You can then save it as a file on your phone, or email it to yourself that way you always have them on you! I had mine on hand because I needed to send measurements off for cosplay commissions. Honestly, no matter where you shop online it’s always a good idea to have your basic measurements handy.

I can’t end this post without thanking everyone above who answered the call. I was expecting maybe a few people to submit their information but I was blown away by how many emails I received! I know for some putting themselves out there with their measurements can be a huge thing, and because of that I appreciate all of you. I really hope this post helps someone out there who’s on the fence about ordering. Is this post perfect? Not at all! But it’s something. I know it always helps to see clothes on actual people and not just models. Everyone has a different shape, even if they rock the same size. Curves can affect how a dress fits. Height can affect hems. Your chest can affect the stretch of a design. There are just so many things to think about when ordering clothes online, especially if it’s your first time.

Again, if anyone has any questions please let me know and I’ll try my best to answer them myself or find the answers. If you still aren’t sure about sizing, feel free to tweet about it! As you can see, the Starpuffs are super a helpful crew. Someone out there will be able to help you out. Please feel free to share this post wherever you want! I want to try and help as many people out there as possible. Tweet it! Facebook it! Hell, throw it on Instagram!

Edit:

Just a little edit to say I don’t receive any sort of referral for sending people to shop at Elhoffer! I just do it because I love the clothing.

Out With The Old, In With The New

September 13, 2019      B      3 Comments

Recently I noticed some weird stuff going on with my previous domain. I’m not sure if anyone else did but I could tell something had been changed or messed with. I had no idea how to fix it, what really happened, or what was going on. At the same time I felt that I had outgrown that domain and blog. I had it for years. I wasn’t feeling the name anymore. There were way too many old and outdated posts. I had thought about just going through and deleting some but that felt like too much work. Then when the weirdness started, I figured why not just start fresh. I was honestly surprised this domain name was available because it seemed so simple! But I’m glad it was. B is a name I’ve been called online (and now in person) since I started using message boards many moons ago. Remember those? And AIM and all that fun stuff? It just felt like an obvious choice and a name that I wouldn’t grow out or tired of.

I’m not going to lie though. I felt very stressed out starting a new blog. I honestly wasn’t blogging that often on the old one. And I noticed a lot of friends had stopped or slowed down on their blogging too. Did I really need a new space? Did I want to put money out for it? Sure, I could have found a free host but I like to own whatever outlet I’m writing on. I’m way too picky when it comes to layouts/themes to be stuck using a limited amount of them. I do like having my own little corner of the web. Something that belongs to me.

Right now I’m in the process of moving a few posts over from the old place. It’s not many but it’s the posts that I felt were really good or benefited others, like my Elhoffer Design fit/size guide, my posts about laser hair removal, and a handful of others. Most of them are already here and just waiting to be published but I just need to find tune them and make sure there aren’t any issues with images or links. I’ll try to stagger them when posting. I don’t want anything to come across as spam!

And that’s it. I honestly have no idea how often I’ll be blogging. But I do know that I would miss having an outlet if I didn’t do this. I do miss writing, I just need to find that spark to get back into it. Maybe this move is the spark that will set everything ablaze.
