Roxie Is A Bandana Model With Geekster Pets!

October 27, 2020      B      1 Comment

Like many dog owners out there, I love putting Roxie in bandana’s. I’ve lost count of how many she has but she has one for pretty much every occasion. That’s why I was very excited when Geekster Pets picked her to be a bandana model for them! The best part is, you can save 15% if you use her code: ROXIE15. I’ve started to really crack down on where I order her gear from. One, I try to shop small, and Two, I start to have certain companies that I just really love for one reason or another. Geekster Pets not only offers some really fun and nerdy options, but they have great customer service too. When I was looking for a birthday bandana, I sent them a message and they were quick to respond and had something that turned out to be perfect. Plus all of their bandana’s are double sided, it’s like a two for one special every time you order!

Isn’t she adorable? That’s just a small sample of what Roxie owns. Geekster Pets really does have something for everyone though. Maybe you’re a DC Comics fan? Or maybe Doctor Who is more your speed. Maybe there’s a Supernatural fan in your life with a pet! And yes, they work for cats too! I mean, you could probably even put one on a rabbit if you tried hard enough. The bandana’s come in sizes Extra Small up to XX Large. If you’re curious, Roxie wears a Large these days. Her first few are Medium and they still fit but they just look a bit small. The nice thing is though, that they use snaps to secure them! That means it gives you a little wiggle room as far as sizing goes. Some of the fabrics even come in headbands or scrunchies that way you can match your pet! How adorable is that?

If you have any questions please let me know! Or if you use the code and run into any issues.

9/11: Remembering John Patrick Hart

September 11, 2020      B      1 Comment

I don’t really do much for 9/11 anymore. I use to attend the local memorial service but after awhile, it became too much. But the one thing I’ll always try and remember to do is share this post. I’ve moved blogs a few times since the first time I wrote this. I actually panicked this year because I forgot to bring the post to this blog. Good thing the WayBack Machine exists and I was able to find an older copy.

A few years ago I was able to visit the 9/11 Museum while in NYC. It was tough. It was emotional. But I made sure to stop and listen to John’s sister talk about her brother. I found myself crying for a man I never knew, but had this weird connection with, all because I signed up to help remember those that were lost that day. If you find yourself in New York, you can see John’s name on the memorial at the South Pool, Section S-39.

—

A few months ago I signed up for the 2,996 Project. I had no idea who I would be assigned to. I didn’t lose anyone during 9-11 so I didn’t have a certain person that I wanted to blog about. I was assigned John Patrick Hart who was in the World Trade Center, Tower 2, 90th floor on that September day five years ago. I’m going to do my best to write about the man who was lost, and not the event that took his life.

After reading some information on Mr. Hart, it sounds like he was a one of a kind guy. He met his wife of 10 years when she was a flight attendant. She would always be showing off pictures of her two children on an airport shuttle. John would then make it a point to always take the shuttle she was on. After five trips he finally asked her out but there was a catch. He explained that she would have to bring her children. They went out for pizza and had fun bowling.

He was a dad would lend a helping hand at his children’s t-ball games. His sister, Jeanine, said that John was the type of dad that whenever he walked into a room, all the kids would just run to him. He would arrange his work schedule around his kids activities. He made sure his family always came first. He knew how important family was since he came from a large family of 5 siblings and had 4 children himself.

John was a typical guy in some aspects though. He was a huge “Cheese Head” who was a lifetime Green Bay Packers fan. During opening season of deer hunting in Wisconsin, you’d find him out there on his annual hunting trip. When in front of the TV, it would always be sports or shows about wars.

He was in New York City that day 5 years ago to teach a management class. The class was on the 90th floor of the World Trade Center’s south tower. After the plane slammed into the building he had enough time to call his wife at home to let her know he was OK. They think John had enough time to escape the Tower but his wife Laurie said that John felt that it was his responsibility to let those who were arriving for class know they didn’t have to stay.

In my eyes this man was a hero. He helped Laurie after her 1st marriage fell apart and adopted her two children. Not many men would step up to the plate like that. Not many men would ask that the children come along on the 1st date. This dad could have been any of our fathers and he reminds me of mine in a way. A father who always made sure he had time for his kids but did whatever he had to in order to make sure they had what they needed.

I don’t know if any of his friends or family are reading this but if you are, I want to let you know that even though I don’t know you or him, I could tell he was special just by reading the various articles I found. I’m sorry that you lost such an important part of your lives but I know that his spirit lives on inside you.

On this 9-11 I’ll be attending a local memorial service, I’ll be lighting my candle in honor of Mr. John Patrick Hart.

You can find the new list and website here.

Shopping For Your Pet Via Small Businesses

September 1, 2020      B      2 Comments

I think the title of this post sucks but I couldn’t figure out a way to word it. If you’re like me though, you probably spend a lot of money on your pet. I mean, why have a doggo if you aren’t going to spoil them? But you can easily spoil them and support various small businesses along the way. Ever since I started an Instagram account for Roxie, I’ve found tons of pet related small businesses! I’m talking everything from collars to treats to bandanas. And I am sucker for a cute bandana. I thought I’d share a few of them here. If you do like what you see, be sure to check out their Instagram accounts! You’ll find plenty of discount codes there, most of the time for 10-15% off.

A&Z Pet Wear Hawai’i // IG

If you couldn’t tell by the name, they’re a small business based out of Hawaii! They offer bow ties, bandanas, collars, and even key chains. The prices are very reasonable. I think the most expensive item comes in around $22. The patterns they offer are really fun and they just released a few Halloween fabrics! Roxie is wearing one of their lovely bandana’s in the photo above.

Paws Bandanas Shop // IG

Along with bandana’s they offer leash holders! They have fun decals you can add onto your bandana’s as well. Roxie has a few bandana’s from them including one for Halloween.

Resin Bark // IG

Resin Bark offers beautiful resin dog tags. They came in all kinds of shapes including ghosts, bones, circles, and hearts! Plus the colors are stunning. You have a few fonts to choose from as well to make sure your tag is exactly what you want! If you aren’t 100% sure on what you like, they offer plenty of premade tags as well. The best thing about these tags is how light they are! If you have a dog who’s not into loud tags this might be what you’re looking for. Plus they’re easy to care for.

Moose And Lulus // IG

Moose And Lulus offer all kinds of items from treats to tags to stickers! They offer resin tags as well but normally offer theirs via drop format. That just means they make a bunch, then put them up in batches. They offer some really fun themes like “beachy” and “fall vibes.” They even offer an Alien shaped tag! Sometimes they offer customized tags as well.

Ava’s Pet Palace

Ava is a 14 year old girl who started her own pet treat company! She offers treats for both dogs and cats. The prices are a steal at just $6 a bag. They’re home made and feature limited ingredients. This is huge since a lot of pets out there have various allergies. Roxie can’t have chicken, so it can be a bit of a struggle to find treats for her. If Roxie could speak, she’d say her favorite is the Oat & Banana.

Kira’s Pet Shop // IG

They mainly offer collars and leashes. I was trying to find something Hawkeye themed and they had the perfect purple arrow fabric. I had a leash and collar made and the quality is just fantastic. They have plenty of fun patterns like honeycomb, unicorns, leaves, geometric, floral, and more! I believe they offer cat sized collars as well.

I’m going to stop there! This is just a very small sampling of what you can find out there for your pets. I know that you can find a lot of these items at your Big Name Pet Store but why not try and switch a few things out and help support the small businesses that are out there? Especially when some people might be depending on their side gigs because their Full Time job was shut down. Just keep in mind that shipping and creating your items might take a little extra time. They’re human after all, not Amazon. Be sure to read over their shop info to see if anything is running behind, or if shipping has slowed down.

Trying Out Poshmark

July 13, 2020      B      1 Comment

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned Poshmark before, but from the buyers side of things. It’s where I find a lot of screen accurate clothing from shows. Right now I’m hunting down various “Lucifer” items. I’ve scored a couple jackets already. Then I figured, why not try and sell some stuff too? My closet is filled with stuff I don’t wear anymore and right now a lot of donation centers aren’t accepting things. Plus, no offense, my Blackmilk clothing was pretty expensive and I want to get something back for it. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try. Guys, I’ve sold 5 items already! I listed a few dresses and a Loungefly bag and they sold! When that first sale message hit, it was like a rush. Poshmark makes it very easy to print out a shipping label and get things out the door. I don’t even have to go to the Post Office. I just use the mail room at work.

It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though. There are a lot of low ball offers that come in. I’ve had a few offering $20 for something that is listed at $80, or even $40. After checking out the Poshmark Subreddit, I quickly learned it’s a thing that happens often. I normally just decline right away, or come back with what I think is a reasonable counteroffer. I know that we’re all looking to snag a deal but let’s be real here. I’m also trying to make a few bucks! I can’t stop digging through my closets though looking for the next thing to list. Right now I still have a few listings left but things are moving a little slower. That seems to be normal this time of year though from the research I’ve done. But so far I’ve made $145!

I need to thank Valery too for taking the time to answer a few questions I had! The advice she gave was super helpful and I appreciate it. If anyone has any questions let me know and I’ll try and offer some help. I’m still very new and I don’t do this as a business thing. I’m just trying to clear out some clothes I don’t wear anymore and earn some extra cash. If you want to see what I have for sale, you can find my Poshmark Closet here and I have a widget in the sidebar.

If you’re using Poshmark, let me know! I’d love to check out some new closets.

Roxie Had A Photo Shoot!

May 6, 2020      B      4 Comments

Back when we were allowed to leave our houses, I signed Roxie up for a school photo themed shoot with Pro Petshots. He’s a local photographer who does pet photography. I came across him while scrolling through Instagram one day and thought it sounded like a great time. He would offer 15 minute themed shoots that were only $40! I mean, that’s a steal! I filled out his form and back in March Roxie stepped in front of the camera!

Kris was great to work with! He knows how to get a pup to show their best side. It was a very laid back atmosphere and he had plenty of props to pick from. I’m still shocked that Roxie had no issues wearing the glasses. She didn’t scratch at them or anything! The Captain Marvel shirt is her own. That background though. It’s the entire reason I did this. It’s hilarious and perfect. Roxie was a real trooper during the shoot. She was still new to the family then and was easily excitable. But Kris was able to get a fair amount of great photos. I’m really proud of how well she did. The turn around on the pictures was lightning quick! I’m pretty sure I had them later that day. I’m not kidding when I tell you I squealed when I saw them. I couldn’t stop laughing at over how perfect they came out. He offered a few free downloads, then you could pay a few bucks to download more. I obviously bought all of them. Yesterday I finally got around to ordering an 8×10 to hang in the house. Like I said in a previous post, I’m That dog mom.

I can’t wait to book another photo session once things get back to “normal.” If you want to learn more about Kris and his business, you can find his website here or give him a follow on Instagram!

Answering Some “When It’s All Over” Questions

April 23, 2020      B      3 Comments

The other day while catching up on reading other blogs, I came across an interesting post on Adventures of a London Kiwi. She answered 13 “When It’s Over” questions and I thought it was a really fun and interesting idea. I believe she found the questions on Life as Louise and she found the questions originally on KezzieAG. I think I have all the linking right but if not, let me know and I’ll fix/edit any mistakes! It’s been a bit of a struggle to come up with writing ideas and I’m sure other Bloggers are in the same boat. Maybe this will be a fun writing exercise and it never hurts to day dream about when we’re able to go out and about in the world again.

1. Restaurant you would go out to:

I’ve been trying to do my part by shopping local and supporting some of my favorite restaurants. But there’s still something nice about sitting down at your favorite place for a proper meal. I think the one thing I miss the most right now is Brunch! I’d probably either go to Iron Rooster, Miss Shirley’s, or Jimmy’s Famous Seafood. They all offer something different but all of it is A+.

2. Friend you would meet up with first:

This is a hard one, I have a lot of friends that live out of town or in another country. I’d probably try and get together with my local squad for a Happy Hour. We’ve been doing some over Zoom but it’s just not the same! I have friends I do regular lunches with too that I miss. Honestly it’s hard to pick just one friend!

3. Place you would go:

THE BEACH. I’ll hop in my car and make that 3 hour drive. I had plans to go to the beach this summer and obviously they’ve been cancelled. I miss the sun, sand, and drinks.

4. Shop you would go to:

Target. Sure, I can still go there with my mask but there’s no need to do and that just adds to an already crappy situation.

5. Food item you would buy/eat:

There really isn’t too much I haven’t been able to eat during all this. If I had to pick something though it would be wings. I’ve been craving wings and it’s just not the same eating them at home instead of at the bar.

6. Cake you would eat:

I’d go to St. Louis and get an Ooey Gooey butter cake. It’s amazing and if you’ve never tried it you’re really missing out.

7. Show you would/will go to see:

I don’t really go to any shows or theater but I’d probably just go see anything that was playing at the movies. I’m sure I could find something even if it meant going to one of the theaters that shows classic films around here.

8. Concert you will go to watch:

I have tickets to see The Foo Fighters in July. I doubt that’s going to happen so I’d try and find a way to see them or The Struts.

9. Relative you will hug first:

My nephews! They’re 9 and 5. I just miss hanging out with them and goofing around.

10. Holiday you would go on:

I’d probably just wait until next year! I have a wedding in the UK to attend in April. I’d probably just make that my trip unless I can find a really good deal before then. I might do a small day trip or something but we’ll see. I have friends in Chicago and Rochester I could easily go visit.

11. Other activity you would take part in:

I’d go see a sporting event! I miss sports. My favorite part about Summer is sitting outside in the sunshine and watching a baseball game. A nice cold beer and a perfect stadium hot dog. I’d try and get out into nature more too and visit some local parks.

12. Thing you would do at work:

My work life hasn’t changed. I still go into the office every day except there’s only 4-10 of us here (between two floors) instead of 200-250. It’s very quiet and a little odd but I’m use to it now. It’s going to be weird once everyone starts coming back to work. I’m not sure I’m going to like all the noise!

13. Item you would buy:

Hmm, maybe just some new clothes. I don’t like buying clothes online because of fit issues. I’ve tried ordering a dress for the wedding I mentioned before and I’ve had to send them all back. So I’d probably head out for a dress!

. . . .

If you end up writing your own post, let me know! I’d love to read some more answers.
