TMP Television Edition: Game Shows

April 30, 2020      B      13 Comments

I love when the Television Edition of Thursday Movie Picks rolls around. I watch a lot more TV than movies if I’m being honest. This week it’s all about game shows. Who doesn’t love a good classic TV game show. If you want to take part, the rules are simple; base on the theme of the week pick three to five movies (or shows) and tell us why you picked them.

1. Guys Grocery Games

I was late to the party on Guys Grocery Games but man, it’s one of my favorites these days. I can’t cook worth crap, which means I get a real thrill out of watching people rush around with weird ingredients trying to follow the rules and come up with something tasty. They do a lot of charity related episodes which is really nice to see too. I even have my favorite judges! And of course the judges that I could live without. If you’re looking for something fun, check it out!

2. Price Is Right

I mean, it’s a classic. I remember watching anytime I would stay home sick from school. My favorite game is PLINKO and the one I hate more than anything is the Mountain Climber. I hate the yodeling that goes along with it. The one game I think that’s most unfair is the 3 Strikes Game. I mean, it’s all chance there and no skill. You have no idea which chip you’re going to pull out! I do wonder if they’re “coded” some how.

3. Wheel Of Fortune

I’d kill this game if I ever appeared. That, or I’d freeze up and blow it. I love word puzzles and this is another classic game that I watch on a regular basis. I get way too fired up when I watch too. When someone gets greedy instead of just solving the puzzle and then lands on a bankrupt?! Oh man, my soul lights up.

4. Supermarket Sweep

I loved watching this back in the day and I think it’s making a come back soon! Of course it won’t be the same without the 80’s/90’s hair. I always loved when they had to rush around and hopefully come across one of the giant bonus items.

A pretty simple list this week. This was another week where I could have easily listed a few more but wanted to try and keep it short. I’m curious to see if I learn about any new game shows this week, and how many repeats happen!

Thursday Movie Picks #301: Numbers in Title (Not part of a franchise)

April 16, 2020      B      7 Comments

Here we go! It’s Thursday which means it’s time for another round of Thursday Movie Picks! I thought the topic this week was a little tricky which made it much more fun. I love the weeks where I have to really sit and think about it. Then I always end up surprised that it turned out to be much easier to choose movies than expected.

1. Seven (1995)

I mean, this is probably the easiest pick out there but oh well. Seven is just one of those movies I consider a classic. The entire plot and cast were fantastic, and it was beyond disturbing. Here we are years later and people are still shouting “What’s in the box?!” to each other.

2. Thir13en Ghosts (2001)

I actually really enjoyed this movie. I remember watching it at a friends place and now anytime it’s on TV I get stuck watching it. It was a bit of a wild ride but oddly enough had a heartwarming ending. Plus I love Tony Shalhoub, and for awhile there Matthew Lillard was all over the horror genre. Is it the best movie out there? Nah, but I was entertained and found the SFX used to be pretty good at the time! I haven’t seen the original but maybe I’ll try and do that this year.

3. Fantastic Four (2005)

I feel like the odd man out when I say I actually really enjoyed the OG Fantastic Four movies. I thought the casting was great and I loved Julian McMahon as Victor Von Doom. Plus I love that Chris Evans went on to become Captain America. The movies were really fun and ya know, not every movie needs to be super serious or award level. Sometimes you just need a good laugh or to escape the world. Especially now.

4. 21 Jump Street (2012)

I found this movie to be hilarious. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill were comedy gold in this thing. Don’t sleep on Ice Cube though! He was the perfect choice to balance out the foolishness and try to be the stern and hard ass boss. I even forgot that the future Captain Marvel, Brie Larson, was in this! If you’re looking for something to make you forget the world and have a good laugh, put this on your list!

. . . . .

There ya go! Once again, as soon as I started thinking about it, the movies just started flowing. I’m glad I was able to mix it up a bit. A few scares with a few laughs. I’m curious to see what everyone else picks, and how many repeats happen!

Finding Comfort In Rewatching Your Favorite Shows

April 1, 2020      B      Leave a Comment

With everything going on in the world today, we’ve all been forced to pretty much stay home. That means we have a lot of time on our hands to watch TV or movies. Some of us are picking up new shows, maybe something you missed years ago, or something that had its release moved up. But some of us are revisiting shows that we loved. I find a certain comfort in watching something that’s familiar. There’s a lot of uncertainty right now. Our brains are overwhelmed with all the information we see on the news and online. The majority of it is important to know, my local Governor is hosting press conferences at least once a week, if not twice. But it’s a lot to handle and absorb.

That’s why I’m turning to shows that I know, shows that don’t need me to think or pay too much attention. A show that I can skip around and just watch the episodes that I really love. Maybe it’s a Halloween episode, or an episode that centers around a convention. I can revisit the wedding of my favorite couple. You know what else is fun to see while watching older shows? All the actors popping up that went onto have big careers! Or they became leads in their own shows. Just last night on an episode of “The Mentalist,” Sterling K Brown had a small role. Now he’s a Golden Globe and Emmy Award Winner! Reed Diamond pops up all the time. Out of all the shows I’ve watched he’s been in at least four of them. You could probably make a drinking game out of his appearances. But I can deal with minor frustrations too, like the early on “will they won’t they” of a show like “Bones.” The frustration of wondering who Red John might be on “The Mentalist.” Will Michael Westen ever get back into the good graces of the CIA on “Burn Notice?” Is Shawn ever going to get outed as a fake on “Psych?” But I know how all of these stories end. The frustration is minor and fleeting, I can skip multiple episodes until I get my answers. Right now, the real world has no answers. And I have no control over that, but I do have control over what’s on my TV. That’s why I’m going to find comfort where I can, and if that means binge watching 12 seasons of a series, then pass the popcorn.

What are you watching these days? Have you picked up a new series? Or are you taking a trip down memory lane? Let me know below!

TMP Television Edition 298: Docu Series

March 26, 2020      B      8 Comments

I love a good docu series! That’s the topic for this week over at Wandering Through The Shelves. I feel like these days there’s a new series out every other day, and something for everyone! I can’t wait to see what everyone has on their list. Maybe I’ll find something new to watch to help pass the time during all this social distancing. If you want to take part in Thursday Movie Picks, it’s easy! Just pick 3-5 movies (or shows), explain why you picked them, and link back to Thursday Movie Picks.

1. Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer (Amazon)

After nearly 40 years of silence, Elizabeth Kendall and her daughter Molly share their experiences with unsettling new details about Ted Bundy.

I know we’re all probably tired of hearing about Ted Bundy but what made this one different is the fact it’s about his girlfriend, Elizabeth Kendall, and her life with him. It really did show a different side to the story, and focused more on the women affected by this monster instead of just focusing on the crimes or the gruesomeness of everything. It did a really great job of showing just how different times were then. The docu series shared some “family” photos of Elizabeth and Ted, along with her daugher, and it was very jarring for some reason. There were clips of him playing with her on the beach and just being a…normal guy? It made me feel very uneasy but in an interesting way. If that makes sense.

2. Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness (Netflix)

A rivalry between big cat eccentrics takes a dark turn when Joe Exotic, a controversial animal park boss, is caught in a murder-for-hire plot.

I haven’t finished this one yet (I think I have 3-4 episodes to go) but GUYS, this entire story is insane. I’m hooked on just how outrageous everything and everyone in this series is. I’m hooked and can’t wait to look into this entire thing more. It isn’t something that would normally be on my radar but everyone online has been talking about it. I figured I had nothing to lose by checking it out and boy, the payoff is unreal. It follows the story of Joe Exotic, Carole Baskin, and the world of big cats. And it’s a weird and wild world.

3. The Keepers (Netflix)

Netflix’s latest docuseries tackles the unsolved murder of Cathy Cesnik, a beloved nun and Catholic high school teacher in Baltimore. After disappearing on Nov. 7, 1969, Cesnik’s body was found nearly two months later — but to this day, the killer remains unnamed. In the ’90s, the case returned to the spotlight after one of Cesnik’s former students accused the high school’s chaplain of sexual abuse, and claims that she was taken to Cesnik’s then undiscovered corpse and threatened. Director Ryan White pieces together the story through conversations with friends, relatives, journalists, government officials and Baltimore citizens, hoping to uncover the truth.

This is a bit of a local story which is why I checked it out when it debuted. It was hard to watch and honestly, anything these days involving The Church just fills me with anger and rage. This came out in 2017 and the Church here is still fighting legislation on removing the statue of limitations on sexual abuse. I hope with the technology that’s out there today justice for Cathy happens.

I’m keeping my list short this week because otherwise it would be filled with way too much true crime. That’s my thing for the most part! I do want to try and branch out and watch some things that are of a different genre but it’s hard. It’s way too easy for me to get sucked into a good true crime show or documentary. And there’s no shortage! I very easily could have written a list that was nothing but Ted Bundy. Now it’s time to go check out the other lists! Fingers crossed I find something to help pass the time.

Thursday Movie Picks 297: Bad Boys

March 19, 2020      B      4 Comments

I’ve skipped the past few Thursday Movie Pick prompts but I’m back for the bad boys! I mean, who doesn’t love a bad boy? If you aren’t familiar with Thursday Movie Picks, it’s pretty simple! As the name suggests, Thursday Movie Picks is held every Thursday. The rules are based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. I told you it was easy.

1. Bad Boys

“Miami-Dade detectives Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) blow a fuse when $100 million worth of heroin they recently confiscated is heisted from station headquarters. Suspecting it was an inside job, Internal Affairs gives them five days to track down the drugs before they shut down the narcotics division.”

I mean, can you have a list about bad boys and not include the movie “Bad Boys?” You could easily have an entire list filled with just these movies. I love Will Smith and Martin Lawrence together. The chemistry they have is fantastic and I’m a sucker for a good action movie, especially when it has some humor tossed in.

2. The Covenant

“In the 17th century, five families with supernatural powers make a pact of silence. Eventually one power-hungry family is banished. The descendants of those four remaining families are heirs to tremendous power. Known as the Sons of Ipswich, the boys attend elite Spencer Academy. When a student there is found dead after a party, unraveling secrets threaten to shatter the pact that has protected the boys’ families for centuries.”

It’s basically “The Craft” with boy bitches and not as great. I would have loved to see a crossover though. The entire reason I watched this movie was because Sebastian Stan plays one of the characters and turns out to be the ultimate witchy bad boy.

3. Cruel Intentions

“Annette (Reese Witherspoon) unwittingly becomes a pawn in Sebastian’s (Ryan Phillippe) and Kathryn’s (Sarah Michelle Gellar) deliciously diabolical wager of sexual conquest when she writes an article in Seventeen Magazine about how she intends to stay pure until she marries her boyfriend. However, Sebastian gets more than he bargained for as he attempts to woo Annette into his bed.”

One could argue he’s just an asshole, not a bad boy, but Ryan Phillipee is fantastic in this role. It’s not that easy to be a bad boy. It has to be believable and sometimes, it’s just not. I remember being obsessed with this movie when it first came out, and with Ryan. Ah, that teen life.

That’s the list for this week! Who are some of your favorite bad boys?

Everyone Go See Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey!

February 26, 2020      B      1 Comment

I finally had the chance to see “Harley Quinn” Birds Of Prey” over the weekend and ya’ll, it was fantastic! I don’t understand why the box office hasn’t been that great for it. I know it’s Rated R which takes out a chunk of audience but still. The action was great, the music was amazing, and I loved the cast. I never saw “Suicide Squad” which means this was my first time seeing Harley in action and boy, I think I have a new girl crush. Margot killed it in the role, from the attitude to the action scenes. And let’s talk about the action scenes! There. Were. So. Many. I honestly think this movie had more fighting sequences than most comic book movies. There wasn’t any overuse of slow motion or any of that foolishness. Seriously, nothing will take me out of a scene more than when there’s way too much slow motion used or other out of place effects. I know sometimes it’s used to help show the speed that something is happening, so we can see it with the naked eye (think Wonder Woman stopping a bullet) but the majority of the time it’s not needed at all.

I was in love with all the outfits and looks as well. I know there’s been a few man babies complaining about the lack of sexiness but um? Like, what the fuck are you talking about? Just because tits are out or ass is showing, doesn’t make something sexy. Less is more sometimes. Dinah rocking a bra crop top with some tight pants is hot! Harley running around in shorts and suspenders with pig tails?? Come on people! That last look in the movie was just, chef kiss. It gave off some major Kesha vibes. Speaking of Kesha, can we talk about the soundtrack? The songs picked worked perfectly with the film. I actually caught myself watching some of the music videos on YouTube before the movie came out and if you haven’t, I recommend doing it! The way the music videos tie in with the movie is perfection. The styling of the artists really fit with the fashion of the movie, and they even use some clips in the videos. The editing is dead on though and I’d almost believe that Meg the Stallion is running around Gotham and hanging out with the ladies. The video below is one of my favorites and you’ll recognize it from a pretty major scene in the movie.

I think one of my favorite scenes of the movie is one that centers around a sandwich. I’ve never related or felt more seen than I did during it. I mean, we’ve all cried over food right? Maybe someone ate your leftovers. Or your order was wrong, maybe it never arrived at all! I’ve had that happen before and by then it was already 8PM and no I don’t want to order another pizza when my pizza should have been here hours ago! Oops, sorry. I still have some feelings about that missing pizza obviously. Harley would understand.

I really hope we get to see more of these characters. I’d love to see Harley have her own film, along with Birds of Prey branching out and having their own film too. I feel like there’s still a ton of stories to tell with these ladies and I cross my fingers we see them again in the future!
