Roxie Is A Bandana Model With Geekster Pets!

October 27, 2020      B      1 Comment

Like many dog owners out there, I love putting Roxie in bandana’s. I’ve lost count of how many she has but she has one for pretty much every occasion. That’s why I was very excited when Geekster Pets picked her to be a bandana model for them! The best part is, you can save 15% if you use her code: ROXIE15. I’ve started to really crack down on where I order her gear from. One, I try to shop small, and Two, I start to have certain companies that I just really love for one reason or another. Geekster Pets not only offers some really fun and nerdy options, but they have great customer service too. When I was looking for a birthday bandana, I sent them a message and they were quick to respond and had something that turned out to be perfect. Plus all of their bandana’s are double sided, it’s like a two for one special every time you order!

Isn’t she adorable? That’s just a small sample of what Roxie owns. Geekster Pets really does have something for everyone though. Maybe you’re a DC Comics fan? Or maybe Doctor Who is more your speed. Maybe there’s a Supernatural fan in your life with a pet! And yes, they work for cats too! I mean, you could probably even put one on a rabbit if you tried hard enough. The bandana’s come in sizes Extra Small up to XX Large. If you’re curious, Roxie wears a Large these days. Her first few are Medium and they still fit but they just look a bit small. The nice thing is though, that they use snaps to secure them! That means it gives you a little wiggle room as far as sizing goes. Some of the fabrics even come in headbands or scrunchies that way you can match your pet! How adorable is that?

If you have any questions please let me know! Or if you use the code and run into any issues.

Putting Together A Mavis From Hotel Transylvania Costume

October 19, 2020      B      1 Comment

I’m not going to let this *waves arms around* ruin my Halloween. I’m still going to dress up. I still decorated. Sure, it’s not the Halloween I wanted but it’s the Halloween I’m going to deal with. This year I’m going as Mavis from Hotel Transylvania. I’ve watched those movies probably 100 times since October started. Did you know that a 4th one is in the works? I can’t wait! They’re such fun and cute movies. Now, I did purchase my costume but most of the items needed to be upgraded. I would have been better off just putting it together myself but oh well. I’m going to show you guys how to come up with your own Mavis look!

Dress:

The dress is a simple black dress with a mock turtle neck and 3/4 length sleeves. I’m sure some of you might have something in your closet that works! If not, here are a few options.

The Drop Women’s Karen Short Sleeve Mock Neck Body Con Mini Dress: This will cost you about $28 on Amazon! But it’s the perfect style and look for Mavis.

Verdusa Women’s Mock Neck Short Sleeve Buttoned Ribbed A Line Skater Dress This one is between $24-$26. It’s a skater style instead of a more fitted dress.

Both of those dresses are on Amazon but if you can easily find similar dresses on resell sites like Poshmark or Depop. It’s a great way to help reduce the amount of waste out there and you can save a few bucks as well. Honestly, it’s such a simple dress you can find it anywhere.

Arm Warmers:

I wasn’t sure what else to call them but you know what I’m talking about. The pair that came with my costume were very small and just didn’t work. Here are a few fun options.

ToBeInStyle Women’s Mesh Sheer Fingerless Novelty Gloves: They work perfectly! These are the exact pair that I ordered and I am very pleased with them. They were $13.95 and fit much better than the picture on the listing.

Seeksmile Spider Web Lace Halloween Fingerless Gloves : These gloves have a fun spider web design similar to the gloves Mavis wears when she gets married. I think I saw gloves pretty close to these at Spirit Halloween as well.

Tights:

In every movie Mavis wears black and red tights! The pair that came with my costume fit OK but I knew I needed something a little bigger. Right now you can find them in person at Spirit Halloween and other Halloween pop up shops. You might even come across them maybe at Target or in other Halloween sections. Here are a few online options.

Leg Avenue Women’s Nylon Striped Tights: Around $8 on Amazon but this is the brand you’ll find pretty much everywhere.

ToBeInStyle Women’s Wide Horizontal Contrast Stripe Tights Opaque Hosiery: These are between $10-15 on Amazon. They have plus size listed as an option but be sure to read the reviews to see how accurate that is.

Shoes:

She keeps it simple with what’s basically red Converse. But you could use any red shoe really! I went on Poshmark and found a pair of red Converse to use. I was able to score a good deal because I didn’t feel like paying $50 for shoes. I almost bought a pair of red wedge sneakers on Amazon but they were obviously trying to be a weird Converse knock off and I felt weird about it.

Wigs:

Mavis has a pretty simple hair style. It’s basically black with a flip and some fun bangs. What wig you buy will really depend on your own skills. You could easily buy just a basic black wig from any cosplay store and cut/style the wig how you like. I’ll list a few of those along with some pre-styled Mavis wigs.

Black Curly Vampire Mavis Cosplay Wig: This is the wig I bought. It’s actually pretty good for $18 but I don’t think the bangs are accurate. But it does have the flip and works for now.

OneDor Women’s Short Black Straight Hair 50s Cosplay Flip Wigs with Flat Bangs: Not a Mavis promoted wig but it’s pretty easy to make work. It again has the flip and the bangs could easily be trimmed. In the reviews someone said they easily used it for Mavis.

Aura: This is a wig from Epic Cosplay but that could be styled to work for Mavis. It already has a small flip and would just need the bangs styled.

Now, if you already have black hair, or hair that can easily be styled but you don’t have bangs I have a simple solution for you! Clip in bangs. I thought about going with that option myself but my hair is a bit of a mess right now and stuck with the wig. But it’s a simple way to make your own natural hair work for you.

* * * * *

See how simple it is! Sometimes she wears a cape and you can find those everywhere. If you want something accurate though, Spirit Halloween sells a Mavis cape online only. The same goes for fangs. It’s not something you “have” to do but you can find various types of fangs everywhere from Amazon to Halloween shops. Once conventions become a thing again I plan on wearing her to one. It’s such a comfortable costume and would be perfect for walking around all day. What are your plans for Halloween?

TMP: Halloween Edition: Snow / Winter Horror

October 15, 2020      B      7 Comments

It’s Thursday! That means another list for Thursday Movie Picks. The rules are simple; based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. All October long the prompt is Halloween themed! Now is the perfect time to join in on the fun.

Krampus (2015)

I have a feeling this movie might be on a few lists. It was the first one that popped into my head. I’ll be honest, the main reason I wanted to see it is because I love Adam Scott (AKA Ben Wyatt). I wanted to see it in theaters but never made it, but I have watched it on TV! Look, it’s not perfect and it’s weird but I found it entertaining. That’s really all I ask for these days. It was even released on my birthday.

The Good Son (1993)

Not 100% sure this would be considered a horror movie but is there anything scarier than a killer kid? Especially when played by Macaulay Culkin? I might actually try and revisit this movie soon. I don’t remember a lot about it and honestly, I feel like the 90’s were filled with killer kid movies. I swear Neil Patrick Harris was in one too?

The Shining (1980)

I don’t think I really need to explain this one! I actually had a hard time coming up with winter/snowy horror movies for some reason but obviously this one sticks out. Just the thought of being stuck somewhere in the winter is kinda terrifying. Then add to it all the weird shit going on, that’s a no from me. It has been a minute since I’ve seen “The Shining,” I might have to revisit soon.

* * * * *

Like I said before, I had a hard time coming up with movies for this list. I think part of it is I just don’t pay that much attention to the season/weather in films? Or those horror movies just don’t reach me for some reason. But I know there are a ton out there. I might have to try and make more of an effort to watch them. As soon as I read some other lists I know I’ll have my brain rattled and go “Why didn’t I think of that one?”

TMP: Halloween Edition: Based on a True Story

October 8, 2020      B      5 Comments

Time for another round of Halloween related Thursday Movie Picks! I feel like this weeks theme could go a number of ways. There are tons of movies out there that claim to be based on a true story, but really just take something and twist it and mold it into something that barely resembles the actual events. Looking at you “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” I’m very curious to see how the lists go this week!

1. The Conjuring 2

This film in the franchise is based on the case of the Enfield poltergeist. The events took place between 1977 and 1979 in London. You can learn more about it here. I have to say, The Crooked Man in this film freaked me out. I have a thing with monsters/spooks that walk in weird ways. My brain just hates it and can’t handle it. I was a little late to The Conjuring franchise and I think this might have been the first one I saw in theaters. I really enjoyed it and recommend checking it out if you’re looking for something spooky this October.

2. The Exorcism of Emily Rose

I remember trying to watch this in bed one night and just being 100% freaked out. It’s a bit of a slow burn and a mix of supernatural and court room drama. Jennifer Carpenter plays Emily Rose and just killed the role. She was even able to contort her body for the role. The real life story is about a girl named Anneliese Michel who was forced to deal with 67 various exorcisms, which ended up causing her death. Michel’s parents and the two priests were found guilty of negligent homicide and were sentenced to six months in jail but their sentence was reduced to three years of probation. They were also issued a fine.

3. Zodiac

I feel like this one might lean more thriller but it does carry a certain feeling of dread. The movie is based on the book of the same title by Robert Graysmith. It has such a star studded cast including Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Jake Gyllenhaal, and John Carroll Lynch. It’s not an action packed film and I think that’s what makes it stand out. Plus the case was never actually solved. It just has a natural cliffhanger which I enjoy. They didn’t try and change it and force a fake ending. I know I’ve seen people complain about the fact that it just ends but that’s real life bro. I’m very much into true crime and this movie is one of my favorites.

* * * * *

That’s it for this week. I thought about doing a 4th movie but again, don’t want to end up needing a certain movie for other lists! Thanks in advance for any comments!

TMP: Halloween Edition: Horror Movie Houses

October 1, 2020      B      7 Comments

I couldn’t pass up taking part in Thursday Movie Picks this month since it’s Halloween themed! If you know me, you know I love Halloween. If you don’t normally take part, now would be a great time to jump in! It’s very simple, based on the theme of the week pick three to five movies and tell us why you picked them. See, I told you it was easy!

1. Amityville Horror (112 Ocean Avenue)

The original “Amityville Horror” terrified me as a kid. Don’t ask why I was allowed to watch it but I did. There was a house in my neighborhood that had the same style windows and it always creeped me out. What’s actually very sad about the house is that it was a place of a mass murder. I think some people forget about that since the movie took over the story. Ronald J. DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family while they were asleep, which included his parents and four siblings. Do I believe the house is haunted in real life? I don’t know. But I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s just a weird feeling in the air there based on the history of the house.

2. Poltergeist

I mean, what could possible go wrong when you build a house on top of a cemetery? I do love a movie that sticks to one location, especially a scary movie. I think it just adds to the dread. You can’t really escape. Plus your home is supposed to be your safe space. Is there anything worse than being trapped in your own home? And look, another movie that I watched when I was way too young!

3. Paranormal Activity

I’m actually not sure I’ve ever seen the entire movie. I don’t scare easy but again, having your home taken over by ghosts or demons doesn’t sound like a fun time. I’m not trying to bring that energy into my nightmares. I do love a good “found footage” style move though. Did you know this movie was originally an independent feature that was completed for just $15,000? Paramount made a few changes/additions for $200,0000 but even that is a small budget. It just shows that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to scare the crap out of people.

* * * * *

I could have listed one or two more, but wanted to keep it short this week. I don’t want to repeat any movies during the challenge! What are some of your favorite horror movie houses?
